Rylee Powers life was never a happy one. When his mother ran away, his father's abuse was turned towards him. Once he turned seventeen, Rylee was able to leave the hell called "home". Without an education or any sort of experience in life of any kind, Rylee turned to the one thing he knew best; stealing, and became an outlaw. With the smile and charm of a rattlesnake, Rylee tends to leave a trail of broken hearts and dreams behind him, running from life with guitar in hand. 

Valentine Calvert's only tragedy in life was when he lost his mother at age five, which he doesn't even count as a tragedy as he claims the memories of her are enough. He grew up a working boy in order to help his father put food on the table. He's worked every odd job imaginable and ended up in the military. When a monster brings fear to his town, Valentine is a help to Decker Wyatt to capture the thing. From then on they become good friends, and Valentine helps Wyatt recognize that he is valid, needed, and wanted.

No one really knew where Fleetwood came from. He traveled from town to town as an inventor before he settled back down in his home town of Talon. He would meet a beautiful girl, Odette, who would become his wife. But when Odette dies during childbirth, Fleetwood goes on a murderous rampage, killing his three, unnamed, infant daughters. When the town figures out what he has done, they hang him for his crimes, but death won’t stop Fleetwood from causing harm to others. He would come back to life, killing Decker Wyatt’s parents and unborn baby sister, gaining him a new enemy that is prepared to do anything to stop Fleetwood and his evil.

Anastasia's life had been controlled by Daddy Dearest since the day she was born. As the daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, she was seen more as property and profit to her father than one of his children. However, that is all changed when she met the outlaw, Rylee Powers. They fell in love instantly, finding comfort in love in one another. They planned to run away and elope in the pine forest, however her father had found them. He believed that Rylee was no good, not being able to support Anastasia in sickness, wealth, and health. He shot his own daughter, now viewing her as a disgrace to the Fortner name. And her ghost still remains there today, under that pine tree, waiting for her dear Rylee to finally say "I do."

In a cabin near Horseshoe Mine lives widow Amelia Hemmingways; a middle aged woman as strong and as rude as a mule. When her well one day dries up, Amelia turns to Decker Wyatt for help to figure out where all her water has gone.
